Welcome to Hobart
Hobart rocks! It’s Australia’s second-oldest city and southernmost capital, lying at the foothills of Mt Wellington on the banks of the Derwent River. The waterfront areas around Sullivans Cove – Macquarie Wharf, Constitution Dock, Salamanca Place and Battery Point – are simply gorgeous with their neat Georgian buildings and the towering bulk of Mt Wellington behind.
The town’s rich colonial heritage and natural charms are accented by a spirited, rootsy atmosphere: festivals, superb restaurants and hip urban bars abound. Hobartians are super-relaxed, friendly and will make you feel very welcome. They hang out in cafes and pubs, joking and idly watching the world go by, dressed for their next wilderness expedition. On summer afternoons the sea breeze blows and yachts tack across the river. On winter mornings the pea-soup ‘Bridgewater Jerry’ fog lifts to reveal the snow-capped summit of the mountain.
